How To Beat the Bloat with These 3 Essential Oils

If you’ve ever experienced any sort of digestive discomfort or stomach bloating, you want immediate relief. I know, I’ve been there. You probably also want to make sure that what you’re taking for the relief is safe. For me, I’ve found essential oils to be safe, powerful and effective natural solutions to beat the bloat. They also help with a variety of other digestive issues—nausea, inflammation, motion sickness, etc.

If you’re not familiar with essential oils, they work at the cellular level and address specific needs and issues inside and outside of the body. They’re a really great tool to have in your home for use immediately when you need it.


And when it comes to bloating and digestive discomfort, my three favorite oils to use are ginger, peppermint, and fennel.

  • Ginger has a very calming influence on the GI systems, and has been known to reduce feelings of nausea and motion sickness. It also helps reduce bloating, gas and occasional indigestion.
  • Peppermint has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. It’s very soothing and cooling, and supports a variety of digestive ailments, including bloating.
  • Fennel has been known to really reduce bloating and has been found to also support the liver and balance hormones.

The best way to use any of these oils, especially for bloating, is to apply them topically. When you use them topically, you can use one or all three. When applying them, it’s best to dilute the oil/oils with a little bit of carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil or almond oil. Then add one or two drops to the carrier oil, and apply it over your abdomen. When you do this, you should start to feel immediate relief.

Another option, (and if you do this, I encourage you to use certified pure therapeutic grade oils approved for internal use) is to add one to two drops to a little bit of water or to a veggie capsule and take it internally.

In addition to these three oils, doTERRA makes a digestive blend—DigestZen— to aid in the digestion of food, soothe occasional upset stomachs, and reduce uncomfortable gas and bloating. This is considered the ultimate oil for digestion. It contains Ginger, Fennel, and Coriander to help ease occasional stomach discomfort, including motion sickness and indigestion, and Peppermint, Tarragon, Anise, and Caraway aid with digestion and help maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract.

DigestZen can be used the same way as the individual oils above. Add a couple of drops to water to take it internally or rub the diluted oil directly on the abdomen.
