How to Release Fear and Prepare for More Time at Home

Uncategorized Mar 16, 2020

This is a wild time we’re experiencing right now, and I know it’s stirring up a lot of fear, anxiety, and questions about the unknown. We’re all feeling it, myself included. (And I avoid the news as much as possible!) It’s important to have ways to release fear while we also prepare for more time at home.

This virus has become the topic of all conversations as we hear of school closings, business closings, mandatory curfews, cancellations of most gatherings, and people being quarantined. We naturally go into survival mode because there is a threat present.

However, we must have tools and practices that will help to reframe our thoughts and maintain a healthy perspective on things. If we allow fear to take over, then we’re giving away our power to something that’s possibly more dangerous than the virus.

As stress and anxiety builds, your immune defenses weaken. That’s not ideal right now. We need to do what we can to boost our immune system and calm the anxiety.

Below are a few of my recommendations for preparing for more time at home and staying calm amidst the chaos.

Have Enough Food on Hand (But Not Too Much)

With some areas of the world experiencing mandatory quarantines and other people choosing to self-quarantine, it’s important to have plenty of healthy food on hand. But don’t buy out the store, save some for others!

  • Fresh Produce – buy whatever fresh veggies and fruit you can find and if you know you won’t eat it in the next few days, then freeze it. (Frozen bananas are awesome! Just peel them before freezing)
  • Frozen produce – buying frozen produce from the grocery store is another option. Opt for organic without any added ingredients if possible.
  • Dry foods – stock up on whole rolled oats, rice, quinoa, lentils, black beans, almonds, cashews, pistachios, macadamia, brazil nuts, flax seeds, chia seeds, rice flour, almond flour, coconut flour.
  • Meat – you can either purchase fresh meat at your grocery store and freeze it or purchase frozen meat like ground beef, chicken, fish, shrimp, etc.
  • Oils – Have enough healthy cooking oils on hand that you can use for roasting veggies, stir frys, and salad dressings. We’ve stocked up on olive oil, avocado oil, and coconut oil.
  • Canned/Boxed foods – stock up on bone broth, canned tuna, canned salmon, soups, and beans
  • Clean water – make sure you have a source of clean drinking water, either filtered, reverse osmosis, or distilled water.
  • Other foods  – coffee, green tea, herbal tea, protein powder, dark chocolate, nut milk, eggs, bread that you can keep in your freezer (we opt for gluten-free).

Natural Supplements & Remedies for Health

For me and my family, it’s important that we’re well stocked with essential oils, vitamins, and other supplements to boost our health during this time. Here are the key items we’re using.

Essential Oils

This is a huge part of our daily routine and especially now. Here are some of the oils we’re using daily.

  • OnGuard – immune support and protection. Applying to bottom of feet, diffuse, use in hand soap, and household cleaner
  • Breathe – respiratory support and clear breathing. Applying to chest and diffusing
  • Frankincense – immune support and emotional grounding. 1 drop under the tongue and applying topically.
  • Lemon – cleansing, detox, and respiratory support. 2 drops in water.
  • Lavender – calming and soothing, reduces anxious feelings. Diffuse and apply topically.
  • Tea Tree – cleansing and disinfectant. Use to clean countertops and minor cuts.
  • Digestzen – digestive support. Apply topically over abdomen or add 1-drop to water and drink.
  • Adaptiv – calming blend to relieve anxious feelings. Apply topically over heart and diffuse.

Emotional Wellbeing

It’s important to maintain a calm and optimistic outlook even though it may seem like things are falling apart. Here are my recommendations for calming your nervous system and relieving anxiety.

Breathwork

You can literally calm your mind and balance your nervous system with your own breath. Check out my video on how to practice this breathing technique for relaxation

Diffuse calming oils

I love to diffuse lavender, wild orange, frankincense, Adaptiv, Balance, Console, and Serenity for their great calming properties.

Meditation

Find a quiet space, sit down and close your eyes if only for 10 minutes. Consider counting your breath or saying a mantra like “I am relaxed” or “All is well”. Breathe in and out slowly and feel relaxation wash over you.

Journaling

Get your thoughts out on paper. If you find yourself expressing a lot of negative thoughts, then consider starting a gratitude journal. Write down 3 things you’re grateful for each day.

Warm bath with calming oils

Hippocrates said, “Healing begins with an aromatic bath and daily massage.” At night before bed enjoy a warm bath with essential oils like lavender or frankincense. Turn on some relaxing music and enjoy.

Prayer

Create a daily prayer practice. Express thankfulness and gratitude and then pray for healing or the things on your heart.

Household/Personal Care Items

Pet Supplies

  • Food
  • Medications

First Aid

It’s always a good idea to have some emergency first aid items on hand. I know things like rubbing alcohol are difficult to find right now, but do what you can and hopefully you won’t need it.

  • Bandaids
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Neosporin
  • Gauze
