An essential oil is the natural, aromatic liquid that is within many shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, and bushes. They are usually extracted through steam distillation.
Scientifically, we know that the natural aromas of essential oils are more than just pleasant. They are emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and physically healing. God has imbued the aromatic molecules of plants with the power to heal us when we are ill and the ability to nurture and preserve our health when we are well.
Essential oils are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs because of the distillation process that makes them so concentrated. Therefore, a little goes a long way. 1-2 drops of an oil is all you need to experience the therapeutic benefit.
Essential oils can be used and natural, non-toxic solutions to support your health in a variety of ways including, gut health, hormone balance, immune health, respiratory support, detoxification, weight management, and healthy skin.
Specific oils, when used topically are excellent options to incorporate into your skin-care routine. Below are my five top essential oils for healthy, glowing skin. These oils are incredibly soothing, healing, and beautifying. Plus, they smell amazing and you’re avoiding the numerous toxins in most skin care products.
Lavender has been studied for its ability to reduce inflammation and allergic reactions in the skin. It has also been used to help the skin recover from burns, blisters, infections, and other injuries. It may also help reduce conditions related to dry skin. I love using lavender to reduce any type of skin irritation and redness.
Frankincense is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. This oil is very beautifying for the skin and helps reduce fine lines, dark spots, and wrinkles. It’s very soothing to the skin. Frankincense also has anti-infectious properties to help protect the skin from harmful microbes.
Melaleuca has powerful antiseptic properties and strong immune-boosting properties. It’s been used for centuries in Australia to heal cuts, wounds, and infections. Melaleuca is a very gentle yet effective antimicrobial oil. It’s wonderful for reducing blemishes and skin irritations.
Helichrysum is a wonderful oil recognized for its ability to heal and soothe irritated, inflamed skin. It contains antioxidant properties and is used for tissue regeneration, pain relief, and healing. It has also been used as a natural sunscreen.
Myrrh is also very soothing to the skin and is often used to relieve dry, chapped, or cracked skin. It’s been studied for its anti-inflammatory properties. It also contains antimicrobial properties, which make it great for fighting specific types of skin infections.
It’s very easy to use these oils in your skincare routine. You can either mix them with your facial moisturizer or mix them with a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil. If you just want to use an oil, like melaleuca, for spot treatment, you can apply directly to the area of concern.
It’s up to you whether you want to use just one oil or a blend of several oils. Regardless, you only need about 1-2 drops per application. Below is a suggested protocol for making a blend.
In a 10ml roller bottle, combine 10-20 drops of each oil. Then top off with fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil. (I love jojoba oil for skin.) Example:
NOTE: It’s always a good idea, especially if you have sensitive skin, to do a skin test before applying to your face. You can put a little oil on your neck or the inside of your arm. Pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils are generally very gentle and the risk of sensitivity is lessened when diluted with a carrier oil.
It’s very important that when you’re using oils for your health that you choose only high-quality, therapeutic-grade oils.
